Sedge Identification Workshop – Afternoon Session

Sedges and sedge-like plants (graminoids) are perceived to be a difficult group to learn because the flower parts are so small and unusual.

We will take a walk in the woods at Wild Wood’s main growing site in Orange County and spend some time learning how to correctly identify sedges, especially those in the large genus Carex. We will focus on common New York species, look at actual specimens in the field, and learn the features that will help you distinguish one species from another (chances are that we’ll probably mention a few other interesting plants along the way.) You don’t have to be a plant expert to participate, and sessions will be fun and informative.

This workshop is offered as a fundraiser for Wild Woods Restoration Project. A donation of $40 per participant to Wild Woods Restoration Project is requested. Donate via credit card or e-check online at the time of registration, or contact linda@wildwoodsproject.org to register and make a cash or paper check donation at the workshop.

Each session is limited to 10 attendees. (Parking is limited). Pre-registration is required.

Steve Young recently retired from 31 years as the chief botanist for the New York Natural Heritage Program where he explored natural areas all over New York state inventorying and studying its rare plants. He is an author of the online New York Rare Plant Conservation Guides and the New York Rare Plant Status Lists.
